6/19/12 The Gemini New Moon occurs at 11:02 am ET at 28°43”.
New Moons are excellent times to write lists of priorities for the month. It’s an energetically auspicious time to focus on what’s important to accomplish and make a commitment to complete. The Gemini New Moon is especially good at aiding any communication or writing projects, as well as situations with sibling or neighbors. As with the full moon, knowing where the new moon falls in your individual horoscope can heighten your awareness on how to maximize its potential.
The Sabian Symbol** for this degree of Gemini is “The first mockingbird in spring”. For anyone who has ever been held captive by the sound of a mockingbird, they are either a bird to delight or confound. With their ability to move through a cacophony of calls, they can make you laugh or even be irritated; yet always they are a reminder of the beauty of detachment.
When I first learned to meditate, it was in the Ansonia Hotel, now a landmark on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. The heart of the building as I knew it doesn’t exist anymore, as it has succumbed to luxury condominiums.
Actually, this is probably best for its overall longevity as a structure, but when I knew it, it was a cavernous rent-controlled beaux arts building in decay. Many of its tenants were very old and/or artists of all genres and levels of accomplishment. It’s fraying red carpet halls were as wide as a railroad apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. You were never quite sure if that person shuffling down the hall was someone who used to be famous or had simply run with those who were (either way, it was hard to imagine).
I learned to meditate in the studio of an opera singer. Our cluster of weekly participants would nod into trance while listening to artists practicing scales above the din of Broadway and 72nd street. The local police and fire stations were certain to announce themselves at least once during our session, so we learned to meditate in spite of unpredictable noise. However, now that I think about it: sirens, singing and street sounds are predictable noise in the city… one just didn’t know when they would occur.
So the “first mockingbird of spring” can’t help but pull us out of a routine, coupled with the added delight of whatever sound the mockingbird decides to emit first. Because of its nature, its song is seldom the same and the odds are it has learned some new calls over the winter.
I think this New Moon reminds us to listen to what’s said and indicated around us, because even though we’re in a cycle of new beginnings, there is information coming that we haven’t heard. If I choose to edit out the song of the mockingbird while I stay on my meditative course, I will miss the news that may be essential to growth. So when you launch into your new projects or goals over the next couple of weeks, be flexible. Keep open to fresh starts and don’t think that because you’ve experienced something before you know exactly how it’s going to play out.
The Moon is VOC* from 11:02 am ET to 1:34 pm. Once the moon enters Cancer, a more reflective mood may come over you. Think in terms of how you really want to connect, whether business or pleasure. More can be accomplished in a thoughtful one-on-one than with a crowd of people. Dinner near water feeds the soul, or at least find a homey or soothing environment.
For those local to Croton-on-Hudson, I facilitate a New Moon Gathering: Seeds for Growth at Opal Moon tonight at 7 pm. Call 914-788-4955 for reservations and information.

*Moon VOC/Void-of-Course… in Gemini, conversations can be particularly misunderstood; avoid important correspondence or phone calls. Great time to clean out old emails and tidy up your desktop.
** We are still in the process of understanding the Sabian symbols, which were channeled in 1925. The spiritualist astrologer Marc Edmund Jones, took Elsie Wheeler, a clairvoyant confined to a wheelchair to a San Diego park with a project. He put a symbol for each of the 360∞ of the zodiacal wheel on 360 cards. She proceeded to come up with visual phrases for each one of them. They were done in random order and they have a magic that is hard to decipher, yet feels totally right.
